Glasses - Frequently Asked Questions
Eye protection during sport is very important, especially if you are playing anything where small objects are constantly flying at your face, like squash, tennis or cricket. If you need prescription glasses, then some of these sports can be difficult to play as wearing glasses can be a bigger hazard than not wearing glasses! Although if you're not wearing glasses, there goes your chances of hitting the ball. It used to be that you’d need to wear huge ‘science lab’ style goggles over your glasses, but now you can get suitable eyewear for sport.
If you’re a swimmer you can get waterproof swimming goggles and have your prescription lenses so you can see clearly underwater. They can give you a whole new experience, especially if you swim in the ocean, you never know what you might see!
Prescription goggles can be a life saver for running. No longer will you need to put up with sweaty glasses slipping off your face, or loose-fitting glasses bouncing as you run along the trail.
The frames of your prescription glasses are key to what style may suit. You can choose from the frame materials first as many people have a preference between a metal and a plastic finish as these two are the most common materials. However, if you’re feeling adventurous you can look at wooden frames, or titanium, or acetate.
Next have a look at your frame shape, these vary greatly, and you can use our Virtual Try-On to suggest what style frames may best suit your face shape. Or you can totally ignore that and pick a shape that you like! The most popular frame shapes are pilot, or aviator, and Wayfarer, with round, cat eye and square coming next.
Finally, you’ll need to choose a colour. You can choose a colour that highlights the colour in your eyes, or you can simply pick a colour that you like. If you're buying a few pairs, the colour you choose should ideally be different so you can match them with different outfits. If you aren’t fond of the wilder colours, we’d suggest getting a basic black, and either lighter grey or a deep brown. But if you like a splash of colour then the sky is your limit!
Prescription glasses can cost as little as $25 and as much as over $2000. It all depends on the brand and the style; some brands are very high-end and you’re paying for a quality finish.
Generally, it all comes down to your budget, and how often you break or lose them. If you tend to lose your glasses often, then you probably don't want to spend a lot of money. But if you’re into the finer things in life, getting a high value pair might be an excellent choice.
