Optician Q&A

Is an eye exam necessary for buying prescription glasses?

If you’ve never worn glasses before, the answer is definitely yes. You can’t buy a pair of prescription glasses if you’ve never had an eye exam, because you could not possibly know what correction powers you need. You need a prescription to buy prescription glasses.

However, if you have a prescription and you have bought glasses before, there are two scenarios:

1. You have a prescription, but your vision is getting blurry again so you want to buy a new pair of eyeglasses.

In this case, you will need to visit your optometrist to get a new prescription, because the blurry vision means your current prescription isn’t powerful enough anymore to correct your vision.

2. You have a prescription and your vision is fine, but you would just like to buy another pair of eyeglasses

In this case, you don’t need to visit your optometrist, because you can simply use your current prescription to buy a new pair of glasses. You can easily buy a pair of prescription glasses online at Vision Direct.

If you don’t have your current prescription details, we have the solution for you: our Lens Scanner app. This app reads your optical parameters off your current pair of eyeglasses, allowing you to shop online for prescription eyeglasses at Vision Direct. All you need is your current pair of eyeglasses, the app, your computer and a universal plastic card for measuring.
