About Medibank Private


Medibank was launched in 1976 by the Australian government, initially as a non-profit but later converted to a shareholder-owned company, operating for-profit basis in 2009. It was privatised in 2014 and is the second-largest health Insurance companies of Australia. Medibank Private today has about 3.8 million members across Australia and New Zealand.


Medibank has a wide range of hospital and Extras options starting at basic hospitalisation and ambulance services up to gold tier policies tailored to singles, couples and families.


Medibank has a network of more than 160 member hospitals and as of June 2019 owns 26.9% of the health insurance market in Australia. It also owns the AHM Health Insurance brand.


Medibank Health Insurance Options


All of Medibank’s policies include providing restricted cover for rehabilitation, psychiatry and palliative care at a minimum. They also offer full cover for accidents and ambulance rides, plus transport and accommodation support if your round trip for hospital admission is more than 200km.


Young people discount


Medibank offers a Youth discount to customers under 30. The percentage of discount one receives depends on what age one was when one became eligible. One can keep one’s discount until age 40 and after that, it decreases by 2% per year.


Additional health services


Over and above their core health insurance products, select Medibank policies also include a range of additional health services. These include mental health support, preventative care, better integrated primary care and after-hours health support. Medibank offers you to choose Hospital only cover, Extras only or to combine Hospital and Extras into a package that suits your specific stage of life. (It may be noted however that some Hospital plans must be taken with an Extras cover; and some Extras covers must be purchased with a Hospital Cover).


The benefit amount against a Medibank Hospital policy depends on the cover option: Basic, Bronze, Silver or Gold. Medibank also offers Plus options on their Hospital policies, which includes additional benefits on top of the minimal amounts set against specific clinical categories by the Government. One can select an excess of a specific $ amount depending on the level of cover one chooses. The higher the excess, the lower is the premium for Hospital cover. The excess applies per member, per calendar year and usually excludes children, student or adult dependants on a family membership package. The out of pocket expenses may vary, depending on whether it’s a Medibank Members Choice Hospital or a Non-Member choice or a Public Hospital. Medibank has entered into agreements with most private hospitals in Australia and several Extras providers. These providers make up the Medibank Members Choice Network. When one visits a Members’ Choice hospital, one may be able to access services at a reduced fee and/or receive higher benefits. 


Medibank Extras


Medibank Extras cover general treatments received outside of the hospital, such as dental, physio, and optical. The amount one can claim depends on the level of cover one has.


Generally, all Medibank Extras include 100% back on optical at all recognised providers. After your upgrade your cover, you may be subject to waiting periods for any new services, or for increased benefits or annual limits. If you need to claim during this waiting period, you will receive the same benefits as your preceding coverage level, on the condition that you have served all waiting periods on that previous level of cover.


With Medibank Essential Extras, one can claim 70% on Member’s Choice providers. One can claim benefits for general dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic, remedial massage and natural therapies.
